Edward M. Smith was named President of ULLICO Inc. on May 1, 2008.  Smith was appointed President by its Board of Directors after serving as the company’s Executive Vice President since January 1, 2007.   ULLICO Inc., founded in 1927 as The Union Labor Life Insurance Company, provides financial and risk solutions for labor unions, union employers, union benefit funds, and union members.

Prior to joining ULLICO, Smith had a long and distinguished career at the Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA) before retirement. Joining the union at age thirteen, he was elected Business Manager of Laborer's Local 773 at age twenty-one. Smith later became International Union Vice President and Midwest Regional Manager serving over 58,000 members. He also served as Assistant to the General President.

Smith formerly served as Chairman of the Illinois State Board of Investment, Chairman of the National Alliance for Fair Contracting, and a member of the Illinois Department of Labor Advisory Board.

In addition to his duties at ULLICO, Smith currently serves on the Board of Trustees for the National Labor College and as a member of America's Agenda-Healthcare for All.

Committed to supporting young people achieve their fullest potential, Smith serves as a board member of the I Can Read Program, an initiative dedicated to helping children with reading and learning disabilities.  He is also a key benefactor to the Therapy Center in Carterville, Illinois, an organization providing assistance to physically disabled children.

Smith was the first member of LIUNA to graduate from the National Labor College with a Bachelor's Degree. He also holds degrees from the Harvard University Trade Union Program and Shawnee College, where he received the college's first Outstanding Alumni Award.

Smith and his wife, Betty, reside in Alexandria, Virginia. They have two children, daughter, Jordan and son, Matt.
