Roger Smith

Born in New York and raised in Southern California, Roger Smith joined American Income Life fresh out of school in 1975.  He quickly excelled as a field agent rising to become Agent of the Year in 1976, his first year with the company.

In 1980 Roger, was promoted, this time to State General Agent for the state of Arkansas. His achievement in growth resulted in acquiring the states of Illinois and Iowa, where he went on to build one of the leading agencies within AIL. His agency progressively set and broke numerous production records over the next decade.

Roger Smith has had a trajectory of leadership appointments within AIL/NILICO. He was named Executive Vice President in 1999, President and Chief Marketing Officer in 2002, and Chief Executive Officer in 2003.

Since assuming the leadership of AIL’s sales force he has instituted a highly successful growth strategy, resulting in the tripling of the agency force, increased retention and consecutive double digit growth in net production. In addition, American Income continues to be the most profitable and highest margin distribution system within Torchmark. His story has been featured in the American Executive Magazine.

Roger Smith is a passionate advocate for economic justice.  He has written on economic issues effecting working families and his opinion pieces have been published in numerous papers nationwide, including the online Huffing ton Post.

He is an articulate messenger for joint partnerships between Labor and Corporate America.  He has addressed various State and Central Labor Bodies as an advocate for Labor Law Reform. He is the Chairman of Business Leaders for a Fair Economy, comprised of 2000 business owners and leaders who support workers rights and public policies to create a sustainable economy.

Roger has a resolute commitment to public service.   He serves on the Board of the National Labor College, Labor’s only accredited college in the United States. He is also a member of the Board of EHDOC (Elderly Housing Development & Operations Corporation) which manages the health, welfare and housing of Union poverty level retirees. In addition, he is a board member for Americas Agenda: Health Care for All.

Roger was the recipient of the 2007 Heroes for Health Care Award, for his support on statewide universal health coverage.  Under his leadership, American Rights at Work, the nations only policy and education group advancing workers rights to form unions, named American Income Life to The 2009 Labor Day List - Partnerships that Work. On behalf of The Business Leaders Coalition and its’ support of The Employee Free Choice,  American Rights at Work is awarding Chairman Roger Smith, the 2009 Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award.

Roger Smith has been an active member of the National Democratic Committee for a number of years.
